Knitted Scarf and Hat with Pom Poms

A total of 9 ounces of yarn is needed for all 3 pieces (mittens, scarf & hat)

Sizes 4, 5, and 6

Needles: Size 8

SCARF

Cast on 30 stitches. Knit 5, purl 5 for 5 rows.
Then reverse: Purl 5, knit 5 for 5 rows.
LENGTH SHOULD BE 40 INCHES

FRINGE: Cut yarn into 5 inch lengths. Using 2 strands, knot fringe through every
other stitch on both short ends of scarf.

HAT WITH POM POM
4 ounce knitting worsted - not wool.

Pattern: All rows * K 3, P 1, repeat from * across, ending with K 1.

Directions:

CAST on: 77 stitches and work in pattern until piece measures about 5
inches.

Use contrasting color(s): knit for 1 1/2 inches (optional). Continue in pattern
until piece measures about 7 1/2 to 8 inches from the beginning.

Top Shaping:

ROW 1 (right side) K 2 together across, ending K 1.

ROWS 2 and 4, P each stitch.

ROW 3 same as Row 1.

ROW 5 K 2 together across.

To Fasten Off:

CUT yarn leaving a length of 30 or more inches to sew back seam.
Draw yarn through remaining stitches. Pull up and fasten.
Sew back seam. Turn up lower edge for brim.

POM POM:

CUT 2 cardboard circles each 2 inches in diameter. Cut out a circle 3/4 inch in diameter in center of each cardboard circle. Cut 3 lengths of yarn (preferably white) each 4 yards long. Hold the 2 cardboard pieces together, wind the 3 lengths of yarn around the cardboard pieces through center until center is filled.

Cut yarn between the 2 cardboard pieces at outer edge and tie strands securely between the 2 cardboard circles. Remove cardboard. Trim ends evenly. Sew to center of crown.
